fourth dimension
I was awoken by a mourning dove
outside my window
the same one
from all my childhood memories
they don’t have those here
yet this one follows me
insists on watching me
my eyes still heavy from sleep
I channeled the discomfort
into a long stretch
extended a leg
towards the edge of the big empty bed
my toes touched
the cold white tiles of the restaurant
the coffee machine
covered in a layer of dust
all the chairs still stacked up
a crack on the sliding door window
the same foot marks
on the kitchen door
toilet paper on the bathroom floor
the register still hadn’t been emptied out
it just lay there
exposed
then the speakers cracked
and in the dark kitchen
he stood
leaning in
prepping onions
tea towel over his shoulder
those same dimples
I remember watching
from the bar
I ran to the dining area
my voice cracked
when I saw Frank
and I ran to him
collapsing into his arms
it reminded me
of that little note he once left me
it will all work out in the end
if he could be so good
then why was he so bad?
