The Grand Deceiver

They forgot to tell you:
You cannot build a happy home
On the rubble of people’s souls.

And when the clock strikes midnight,
You’ll wake up drowsy—and you’ll know
That the times were tricks by ghouls
Buried beneath your bathroom floor.

Our long drives discarded by the trowels,
The backseat of my car still stacked with towels
From that time we got so drunk, we forgot words had vowels.

Through the mist of your memory,
I may not have left much of a legacy—
But to me, you’ll always be
The most important piece in the treasury.

The kid who married too soon,
Never taking the time to figure himself out,
Staring at the mirror, full of doubt,
Dragging two people into it,
As if hurting one wasn’t enough.

You should know that while you’re living,
I’ll be dying slow.
And when the future knocks,
I won’t be there to see you let it all go—
All for the sake of putting on a show.
